On this day in leadership history in 1955, Marilyn Bell of Toronto, Canada, at age 17, became the youngest person to swim the English Channel. Being a leader isn’t always the focus or goal, but the title is usually given by inspirational acts of courage and commitment. Leadership Training Camp Pays Off

“I think the most important thing I learned was how true leadership involves respecting everyone else with their ideas and opinions,” she said. “I learned that a leader isn’t someone who just directs the crowd without taking their needs into consideration, instead, a leader listens to everyone and respects them, which is so important.”
